Harmonics in power supply networks can cause nuisance tripping of protective devices and instrument errors. OPERATING PRINCIPLE
OF AN ACTIVE FILTER

An active filter is connected in parallel with the power line to the load. The harmonics in the load current are measured via a current transformer, these measurements being used to control a current generator, which then exactly replicates the harmonic currents and injects them into the network but at the opposite phase. This way, the harmonics effectively cancel each other out, so that the load then only draws current at the fundamental frequency from the power supply.
